>2 ( . ? CAROLINA BIRD CLUB Spring Bird Count — 1982 John O. Fussell III As was the case last year, twenty localities were censused. Nineteen of the areas censused this year were the same as those censused in 1981. However, no report was received from Beaufort County this year, and Charlotte, where no census was held in 1981, was censused this year. Coverage was obviously good on this year’s Spring Count. Even though there were only 20 censuses, there was a total of 493 field observers and 1347 field-hours. Only a few localities were worked by skeleton crews. Most of the counts were held on the weekends of 1-2 May and 8-9 May. Only four were held on 24-25 April. Almost all localities had pleasant weather conditions with mild temperatures and light winds, although the North Carolina piedmont and mountain counts held on 8 May had some early morning rains. On the other hand, there was, in associ- ation with most censuses, little or no weather of the type that produces strong flights and/or groundings of landbird migrants, and several compilers mentioned a scarcity of migrants. No exceptionally rare species were reported on the 1982 Spring Count. On the coast, Morehead City, Wilmington, and Charles- ton all had very good species totals. Inland, Raleigh had a respectable 141 species and Jordan Lake had 33 species of waterbirds. On this Spring Count, a few species totals stand out. Impressive was the total of 445 Brown Pelicans This species has definitely been increasing at a number of localities. The number of Double-crested Cormorants reported on inland counts (121) was unprecedented; most of these were at Jor- dan Lake. House Finches continue to increase. They were recorded on nine censuses (total of 148 individuals), and two more areas reported them during the count period. Large numbers of Red-breasted Nuthatches, Evening Gros- beaks, Purple Finches, Pine Siskins, and American Gold- finches were present in the Carolinas this spring. COMPILERS’ COMMENTS COAST CAPE LOOKOUT, N.C. (center: 4.5 miles NE of Cape Lookout Lighthouse). 9 May. Census was restricted to Cape Lookout, from the lighthouse to the mainland, and to birds seen along the ferry route between Harkers Island and Cape Lookout. A cold front passed the previous night and emphasis was placed on searching for migrant landbirds in the shrub thickets. Tur- key Vulture is rare this far from the mainland. Northern Bobwhites and Ring-necked Pheasants are established from introductions 20 or more years ago. Upland Sandpiper was on the lawn of the coast guard station. Northern Rough- winged Swallow is rare here, although it breeds on Harkers Island. The Palm Warbler was late. The Evening Grosbeak was late and is very rare on this barrier island. — JOHN FUSSELL, 1412 Shepard Street, Morehead City, N.C. 28557. MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (center: 0.7 mile NW of Crab Point) 25 April. The late Redhead (Compiler, Davis) was a crippled drake. The American Swallow-tailed Kite (Com- piler, Davis) was flying southwestward over North River Marsh. The late Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Purple Finches were at Newport’s yard near Morehead. The White-breasted Nuthatch, male Black-throated Blue Warbler, Northern Waterthrush, and Louisiana Water- thrush were all found by Davis at Walker’s Mill Pond near Newport. The nuthatch, both heard and seen closely by Davis, is very rare in area although it is resident in sections of nearby Craven County. Davis saw the unstreaked throat and white superciliary line of the Louisiana Waterthrush, which is very rare in the count circle, where there is little or no breeding habitat.— JOHN O. FUSSELL III, 1412 She- pard Street, Morehead City, N.C. 28557. WILMINGTON, N.C. (center: Monkey Junction). 24 April. The 2 immature Great Cormorants were seen by Galizio and Hardwick at Carolina Beach Inlet. Identifica- tion was based on presence of whitish belly and yellow bill. [Great Cormorants have been found in the Wrightsville Beach-Carolina Beach area during several recent winters and the observers are familiar with the species. However, it should be stressed that immature cormorants should not be identified as Greats based solely on these criteria. Immature Double-cresteds frequently become white bellied and yel- low billed in spring. — JF] Blue-winged Warbler and Black-throated Blue Warbler were found by Davis along Orton Road. Brackett found the Cape May Warbler at Carolina Beach State Park. [The Fox Sparrow (Nunnally) was considered to be unusual (very late) but no details were provided. — JF] — KITTY KOSH, 188 Lake Forest Park- way, Wilmington N.C. 28401. CHARLESTON, S.C. The following count day and count period species were late: Lesser Scaup, Red-breasted Merganser, Sharp- shinned Hawk, Northern Harrier, American Kestrel, White- crowned Sparrow, Song Sparrow. A Short-billed Dowitcher (Compiler) was at the ponds at Becker Sand and Gravel Company on 10 May. [The bird was not heard and the details do not rule out Long-billed Dowitcher. However, a Long-billed would be extremely unusual so late. — JF[ — PHILIP J. CRUTCHFIELD, 901 Montclair Road, Fayette- ville, N.C. 28304. RAVEN ROCK STATE PARK, N.C. Apparently the count was too late for some transients and too early for others. A prime birding area. Lake Wheeler, suffers increasingly from intensive use by power boats and fishermen. The most noteworthy finds were a Common 'Moorhen, seen by many count participants at Greenview Pond and a Nashville Warbler found by Mullen at Crabtree Creek. A Lark Sparrow was seen by Josh Lee during the :ount period. [No details were provided for either the Nash- /ille Warbler or Lark Sparrow. — JF] — R.J. The unfilled Falls of the Neuse lakebed attracted many unusual waterbirds. Notable were the many shorebirds. Of the 9 species of Charadriiformes, only the American Woodcock failed to set a new high. Outstanding totals were the 83 Greater Yellowlegs and 60 Pectoral Sandpipers. Other noteworthy waterbirds were the Little Blue Heron and Cattle Egrets (Alwon), Red-breasted Merganser and Sora (McConnell) and count period Double-crested Cormorants (W.H. Wagner). — MIKE SCHULTZ, 3008 Glendale Avenue, Durham, N.C. 27704. 27704. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (center: intersection of Franklin and Columbia Streets in Chapel Hill). 2 May. The filling of Jordan Lake has created habitat for such species as Double-crested Cormorant, Osprey, Herring Gull, and Ring-billed Gull. (center: the point where SR 1700 formerly crossed New Hope River). 9 May. Notable was the large number of Double-crested Cormorants (73). The most unusual of the many shorebirds was the White-rumped Sandpiper (Alwon, Gerard). Semi- palmated and Black-bellied Plovers were found by Davis, Jasmine, and Senior. [Of the 2 Rough-legged Hawks (Brough- ton et al), only 1 was described, and that description was limited to the tail. Such details are certainly inadequate for this species, which is rare even in mid-winter, much less in may. — JF] — BARBARA ROTH, 7 Lone Pine Road, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27514. GREENSBORO, N.C. WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (center: intersection of 1-40 and Silas Creek Parkway). 8 May. Spring migration was very poor this year. Very few shorebirds were seen; no shrikes could be found. Ameri- can Robins were unusually abundant; this was probably because of the large number that wintered. Rare were the adult Little Blue Heron (Bynum, Knowles, Weatherly) and the count period Common Moorhen (Kalet, Compiler), which was found injured on 6 May, after it had attempted to land on a blacktop road. — RAMONA R.
